Nominating for an MVT

It has come to my attention that there are many awards for people. Some of these awards are deserved and some of them I find to be questionable. There is an award that I am unaware of the existence of, although it absolutely should. That award is for Most Valuable Teacher.

Yesterday I went back to visit some of the most influential people in my life. These people who three of my high school teachers. I don't know if they are fully aware of the impact they have had on my life. If they are not, they should be.

The first was my grade 9 English teacher. She was amazing. She always knew when something was wrong, even when I didn't say anything. She taught me how to begin to think about poetry and great literature. My enjoyment of the "great works" begins with her. Over the years, she has become a good friend and one whom I wish I saw on a more regular basis.

The second knows how important she is to me. She was my grade 11 math teacher. I am not a math student. I understand the principles of math because they correspond to many aspects of music. I just tend to not like numbers very much. She has led the most extraordinary life, a life that I doubt I will ever lead. She said the most interesting and inspiring thing to me one day though. She said that when she grew up, she wanted to be just like me. I found that interesting, because I want to be just like her.

The third was my writer's craft teacher. He knows how good is he. The problem is that administratively, his talents are not recognized. This is truly unfortunate because he has been an inspiring teacher to many students. He is one of the few high school teachers I know who has past students return to visit him in the final years of university. Despite his methods that are not always appreciated, he has taught me more about the craft of using words than any other teacher I know. He has a library of books that I hope to rival as I age. Not only does he have all these books, but when he reads them, he makes them a part of himself in a manner I have rarely seen. He loves words passionately and hates to see them misused. Despite the fact that I am no longer one of his official students, he continues to teach me and encourage me in my writing abilities.

These three professional teachers have to put up with more than I can possibly imagine in order to attempt to put knowledge into the heads of those who do not desire it most of the time. I don't know what makes it worth it for them. I know that at the end of a long day I only want to curl up with a book and a glass of wine. I try and make a positive difference in peoples, but I have no idea if I will ever have the same amount of impact as these three teachers. They deserve an award more than anyone I know. They have impacted my life in ways I am sure I will never fully understand as well as the lives of the hundreds of students they have taught over the course of their careers. They are not usually recognized. They should be.
